Increasing Student Involvement in the Spectroscopy Society of Canada
Summary of a report by Tina Mann to the March NEC meeting
Main Goals
Increase student membership. Support student involvement in the SSC. Form student chapters.
Other Ideas
Institute an industry sponsored Graduate Student Award/Bursary based on the student's research in the areas of spectroscopy or analytical sciences; Institute an Undergraduate Student Award/Bursary; Start a Student Newsletter to be sent to Chemistry Departments in Canadian Universities describing the SSC and the benefits of student membership.
Events and Meetings Associated with ICASS Conferences
Invite industry and government representatives to meet students in association with a CAREER FAIR sponsored by the SSC. Hold a student social event that would include the presentation of awards such as the current poster awards and a possible student of the year award. Hold a student AGM that would include the election of a new student representative to the NEC.
A Student Interest Section on the SSC Website
This could contain information on student chapters and how to get one started, details of regional meetings and presentations, who to contact for more information and benefits of membership. Use the Canadian Society for Chemistry student web page as a model for an SSC student web page.
A Booth at the Career Fair at Enviroanalysis 2002/ICASS
Conference co-chair Ray Clement has offered a booth free of charge. It would be useful to have some SSC members on hand to talk about the benefits to students of membership in the Society.
Suggested Timing of Actions
This April: Send a Student Newsletter to Chemistry Departments via e-mail.
End of April: Prepare an outline of Platform for Student Chapters to be submitted to the NEC.
May (at ICASS): Talk to students at the conference about the possibility of creating student chapters at their schools.
September: Creation and organization of first student chapters.
Later this year: Create a list of potential Award sponsors and approach potential sponsors. Set a deadline for nominations. Put an advertisement in CJASS.
