REPORT FROM THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF OF CJASS (October 29, 2002)

Since the last NEC meeting at the time of the 48th ICASS, 10 papers from the conference were submitted of which 1 was rejected, 6 accepted and 3 are being revised. Issue 4 of Volume 47, (2002), which is with the publisher, is therefore entirely devoted to the 48th ICASS. The issue includes 4 of the accepted papers - 3 from Canada and 1 from Germany. Issue 5 will contain contributed papers. (I have been so swamped that I have not had a chance to process them yet!) Issue 6 will be another issue devoted to the 48th ICASS. Two more issues are also expected to be devoted to symposia held at the 48th ICASS: one from Guest Editor Ricardo Aroca (University of Windsor) and one from Guest Editor Stephen Brown (Queen's University.), on the symposia that they each organized.
Thanks to the excellent work of Guest Editor Pierre Harvey (University of Sherbrooke), I already have 11 accepted papers for the special issues in honour of past Editor-in-Chief, Ian Butler. Since a few more papers are expected, there will be 3 special issues. The first issue of 2003 will therefore be in honour of Ian Butler, and will be published at the beginning of 2003. This marks a real change from previous years!
Meanwhile submissions are starting to be made to Guest Editor Doug Goltz (University of Winnipeg) for the special issue in honour of past Editor-in-Chief, C. Chakrabarti. Furthermore, the rate of unsolicited submissions is steady or slightly rising. In addition, special issues should again be devoted to the 49th ICASS. Therefore, it clearly appears that the revitalization process has been successful! In conclusion, I would like to thank the Editorial team for their invaluable support and the support of Journal's sole sponsor for 2002, Varian Canada Inc., without whom CJASS could not have crossed this road.

Diane Beauchemin.

STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE REPORT (OCTOBER 30, 2002)

Steps have been taken to increase student involvement in the SSC. These include the appointment of a student representative and approval of a proposed bursary award program. Recognition has been made to students who won or were nominated for awards at the ICASS/EnviroAnalysis Conference
Student Member Profile
An addition to the Newsletter has been made to recognize student members of the SSC and their contributions to research and the Society. Alison Holliday was the student profiled for the July 2002 issue. It is suggested that a running record be kept online of the students recognized in this section, at least for the first couple of years
Proposals for a Bursary Program
a. A small working group of 2 or 3 people be formed to develop a plan, potential sponsors, application form requirements, etc.
b. Potential sponsors be approached to match the bursary amount. Are there any special protocols, rules, or suggestions for how to do this?
c. Advertising for application submissions in February and March 2003.
d. Proposed application submission date: March 31st 2003 (same as the abstract deadline for ICASS2003)
e. Review of applications by sub-committee: March 31st until May 1st, followed by submission of proposed winners to SSC-NEC for approval: May 15th
f. Do we want to have an award to go with the bursary?

Tina Mann, Student Representative.
