Report from the Managing Editor and Business Manager of CJASS
Presented at the May 26 NEC Meeting

The publication of all issues of Volume 46, 2001 will be completed much earlier than in previous years. The final issue is devoted to The 14th MOOT NMR Symposium held on Sept. 29-30, 2001 at the University of Sherbrooke, Québec, and also contains the Subject and Author Indexes. It is anticipated that the first issue of Volume 47 will be printed in July 2002. The journal revenue for the year 2001 shrank by about $6000, due to the non-renewal of one sponsorship and one advertisement. The typesetting and printing work for Nos. 1-3, Vol. 46 was done by Pro Printers of Ottawa. The typesetter left the company before completion of Issue No. 3, so I undertook the typesetting work for Issues Nos. 4-6. This will produce a saving on operating costs for the Journal of $205 per issue.

Problem with electronically sent (e-mail attachment) manuscripts
A problem of missing symbols, scientific formulae, superscripts, subscripts and some other needed fonts in electronically sent (file attachments as Microsoft Word documents) manuscripts was noticed in several articles during the typesetting work. This resulted in excessive time and labour to insert these missing symbols and fonts in the manuscripts during conversion to the Journal style. Longer time was also needed for proof corrections, thereby causing delays in printing. To alleviate this problem a request was made to the Editor-in-Chief to supply the original diskettes from the authors along with hard copies of accepted manuscripts by mail.

Need for price increase for institutional subscribers
In the year 2002 we have lost a valuable Corporate Sponsor: Agilent Technologies. Therefore with only one sponsor (Varian Inc.) left, it is difficult to meet the operating costs for six issues of the journal with a shrinking budget even after receiving the maximum allowable SSC journal grant of $10,000 per year. Hence I propose an increase in the subscription rate (effective January 1, 2003) for our institutional subscribers as follows: The basic rate for a Canadian or international institutional customer or a bookshop will increase from $175 to $200 per year. The postage and handling charges will increase from $15 to $20 per year for a Canadian and from $25 to $30 for an international customer. An Agent can deduct 15% a discount from the basic rate. This brings the total to $170 + $20 = $190 per year for a Canadian, and $170 + $30 = $200 for an international institutional customer.

Need to reduce the number of issues per year or combine Nos. 5 and 6 issues as one issue
In order to maintain the operating cost of the journal within the available resources, I suggest that for the year 2002 (Volume 47) the number of issues be reduced to 5 or numbers 5 and 6 be combined as one issue (like we did in the year 2000). If around Sept.-Nov., 2002 we can get another sponsor such as Agilent Technology, and increase in subscription as suggested above and accepted by most of our loyal institutional subscribers, then we can proceed to publish 6 issues in the year 2003 (Volume 48). Details of the income and expenses for CJASS, Vol. 46, # 1-6, 2001 together with budgeted expenses where a forecast was feasible are presented in Tables I and II. It is noted that even with less typesetting expenses for Nos. 4-6 issues than budgeted, there is an estimated deficit of $2247.
The budgeted expense for typesetting comprises payment to me $600/issue plus an additional payment of $300 for making the Subject and Author index in the last issue of the year. Although subscription revenues from national and international customers remained about the same as in 2000, there is a significant shortage of income from sponsorships and advertisements. Therefore, there will be the need (for the first time) to seek the maximum allowable grant of $10,000 from the SSC, and either reduce the number of journal issues to 5 or combine Nos. 5 and 6 into one issue.
